Melon Salad with Avocado-Honey Dressing

I made this melon salad with avocado-honey dressing as part of a partnership with Saborea Uno Hoy. As always, the opinions and my love for avocados are mine. Thanks for reading and supporting the brands that make Savoir Faire possible.

This melon salad with avocado-honey dressing is a dish made in heaven.  I found the recipe at SaboreaUnoHoy.com, the ultimate source of information about the benefits of incorporating avocados to your diet. For me, they are also an invaluable source of inspiration on how to eat avocados.

Take a look at this salad. It’s made with watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe melons, mango and julienned green, yellow and red bell peppers. Yes, fresh fruit and veggies combined!  And you can add strawberries and cucumbers too! Your imagination is the limit.

What makes this salad really special is the dressing: a creamy avocado-honey vinaigrette with the citrusy flavor provided by fresh orange and lime juices. It’s so heavenly delicious, that you don’t need to add salt or anything else. Bingo! This recipe has been reviewed by the American Heart Association and certified as heart-healthy. Perfect for these hot days of summer!

Why are avocados good for you?

Fresh avocados are a heart-healthy fruit. They are not only low in saturated fat, but they are also cholesterol and sodium-free. This is why when I’m planning my family meals, avocados are always on the menu!

On top of being de-li-ci-o-us, more than 75% of the fat in fresh avocados is unsaturated, in other words: it’s healthy, good fat. Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats can reduce bad cholesterol levels in your blood. Hence: it may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Hispanics in the U.S. continue to face higher risk for heart disease than the non-Hispanic population per the National Institutes of Health. Unfortunately, that’s the result of our higher rates of high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. But luckily for us, things are changing. A recent survey revealed that U.S. Hispanic Millennials are taking care of their elders and want better sources of information on how to provide heart healthy diets for them.
